    THE VESSEL

    KLM JIWA ā€“ SOUL

A classic 23m traditional wooden Phinisi, Jiwa is the kind of ship that would have been used years ago by merchants who traded throughout the archipelago. Her twin masts, clean lines and rustic charm provide for a unique way of experiencing the Indonesian islands.

ā€œShe tends to blend into the environment rather than impose on it.ā€

Jiwa is a solid boat. Built using the finest ironwood with full length beams and double keel, her builder has ensured that as well as looking great, Jiwa has been engineered to perform well out at sea. Her 6-cylinder diesel engine pushes her along at a respectable 9 knots and if the winds are right, her sails can be set for some classic cruising.

Jiwa is split into 3 levels. The top deck is where the boards are stored, the shaded area is perfect for yoga, lounging on day mattresses and watching the action in the water. Itā€™s also the prime place to hangout under magical sunsets after a long day surfing.

The foredeck has a table and comfortable seating under a large canopy. Towards the stern is the open plan saloon, itā€™s a huge area with dining table and couches down each side overlooking the ocean. The saloon ensures you can always escape from the sun and that everyone can still find space to spread out in less favourable weather.

Below decks, is the A/C sleeping cabin with beds for 10 guests and two bathrooms. The cabin is very roomy and we have installed a TV for those wishing to watch movies during the day or night.

We have 2 tenders assisting Jiwa. A 4.2m Rigid Inflatable Boat with 40hp engine which provides for fast transfers to and from the surf and also a 5m boat perfect to fishing trips and for scouting out potential ā€œaround the cornerā€.

  • Surf

As one of the most remote surfing destinations in Indonesia, the Banyak Islands still offer plenty of opportunities to surf empty waves. Only three charter boats operate full-time in this area ā€“ so this means more waves for you!

The best time to surf the Banyaks is from March to October, but the most consistent waves are from April to August. The average wave height is between 1 and 2.5 metres. Some of the best waves in the Banyak Islands include Treasure Island Rights, Cobras, Joysticks, Toytown lefts and many others.

    Treasure Island Rights

Also known as Bangkaru, Treasure Island is a long right-hander with three tube barrel sections. A fun wave in the right conditions.

    Cobras

Cobras is a swell magnet and where you should head if itā€™s not big enough for Treasure Island. A gorgeous location with fun, tube sections.

    Joysticks

If youā€™re looking for a fun right-hander, Joysticks is what youā€™ve been searching for. Situated in the Bay of Plenty, it produces a perfect tube section on takeoff, a long wall, then another tube section inside the bowl. When the swell is up, this wave is great for intermediate surfers.

    Toytown Lefts

Often referred to as a softer version of the well-known Macaronis break in the Mentawai Islands, Toytown left is a fun left-hander in the Bay of Plenty. With lots of great sections and even some barrels on offer, this wave is one to remember.

    NIAS AREA:

    Asu

Powerful, perfect, idyllic are all accurate descriptions of Pulau Asu and the left-hand wave that breaks along its shores. Comfortably holding anything from 3 ā€“ 12ft ,Asu is another of those straight from a magazine Indo type set ups. When small itā€™s a fun wave that allows for turns, tubes and is manageable by most levels. 4-6ft is probably most peopleā€™s idea of perfection, the wave starts to open up a bit more and offers nice barrel sections and fast walls. Over 6ft (double overhead) Asu has consequence but if youā€™re up for youā€™ll likely score some of the best waves of your life.

    The Beachie

Depending on the banks this beach can deliver Turquoise A frames , good barrels or soft ramp and turn sections . regardless itā€™s usually always fun and most importantly empty. A nice change from surfing over reef yet still able to deliver quality waves when the banks are right.

    Shoal

The shoal is a new wave as a result of the the 2009 earthquake that caused a lift in the reef. Breaking a couple of Km out to sea means that itā€™s a little fickle and sensitive to wind but on its day itā€™s one of the best rights in the region. Shane Dorian and friends were out here last season on one of the solid swells, definitely worth checking if you like solid conditions.
