Amys Place

- Krui, South Sumatra

  • Amys Place - Krui

Amy’s Place sits on the beach near Krui, in the Lampung province of southern Sumatra, with a spectacular view of the Indian Ocean. Krui is off the beaten path, but not completely left behind.

Looking up Southern Sumatra’s coastline, it’s easy to see how so many wave options exist in one place. This area supplies a wave for every swell, tide, and wind direction. It has also absorbed very little western influence, so come prepared for a local experience!

What sets Amy’s Place apart is the massive garden. The property encompasses an acre and accommodates only 10 guests, so you can have as much or as little interaction as you like.

I take things like good surf, clean bathrooms, and cold beer seriously. I hope you do too.

  • Accommodation

The rooms are large, and we only accommodate 10 guests at a time, so you have plenty of space let loose and relax.

Even though we’re in the Middle of Nowhere, Indonesia, each room has the following amenities:

    • AC cooled new for 2023 with a queen size bed and a king single bed (spring beds, not foam)

    • a private Western-style bathroom (with very respectable water pressure)

    • 100% cotton bathroom towels and sheets (which are not easy to come by in these parts)

    • storage for all of your gear and boards on the custom built shelves, inside and out.

    • WiFi (remote Indonesia isn’t known for its internet, but you’ll be able to cover basic internet needs)

Go ahead, make a mess. You’re on vacation, and the rooms are tidied up daily, with the sheets changed twice weekly. Of course we have fans and mosquito nets. We want you to be comfortable. We provide 24 hour security and lock boxes for your peace of mind.

  • Surf

The best thing about this area is the complex coastline. You’re virtually guaranteed a wave, no matter what the wind or swell direction dishes out. The waves typically range from 2-8 feet. Bigger swells coincide with trade winds from June to September (peak season), and smaller swells with lighter winds during March to May, and October and November (shoulder season). Most of the waves fall into the intermediate to advanced category.

Within 5 minutes, you have access to 6 waves:

The Slab out front is a beast, best suited for hellmen and hellwomen.

Leftovers is a fast, fun left-hander that previous guests have described as a less crowded version of Bingin.

The Peak is a perfectly backdoorable right-hand barrel, along side a thick lipped left.

Krui Bowls is a bowly, barreling left.

Krui Left is one of the most consistent and high quality waves in the area with mechanical barrels and a long, workable wall.

Krui Right is racy and playful.

Only a bit further out, you'll find:

Beach breaks (Mandiri and La'ai): 15 minutes in either direction. They're both punchy, fast, and hollow. Lots of bang for your buck at any size.

The most well known wave in South Sumatra is Ujung Bocor , Karang Nyimbor (often simply called The Point), 30 minutes south of Amy’s Place, a left-hander where you’ll score the longest waves of your trip. Rides of 200+ meters/yards are common.

Another 10 minutes south of The Point is Way Jambu, also known as Sumatran Pipe, a barrel machine that's as heavy as it sounds.

An hour’s drive north will bring you to Jenny’s Right, Honey Smacks (AKA A-Bomb), and Jimmy’s Right and Left (in that order), not to mention all the waves in between. Jenny's is at her best when the winds are technically unfavorable making it an amazing option to have, while the rest of the of this group fall into a "the bigger the better" category.

On smaller swells, a short boat ride over to Banana Island will provide you with waves and that feeling of taking the road less traveled.

Southern Sumatra is the one-stop shop of surfing. Show up with your sense of adventure and you'll be rewarded!

  • Meals

You certainly won’t have to worry about starving to death here, or having to keep a schedule. The kitchen is open 7am-7pm, so you can eat around your surfing, rather than surfing around your eating.

All meals are included, and most are authentic Indonesian, plus a few favorites from home (the US). All are prepared to a Western standard.

The kitchen crew take a lot of pride in a job well done, and nothing makes them happier than seeing you enjoy your meals. They’ll always go that extra step for you. Just ask. They are truly amazing, and I consider myself extraordinarily lucky to have them here. I surely would've starved to death by now without their stellar efforts.

The portions are generous and healthy, so you will have lots of energy for surfing. The menu is varied, and includes chicken and locally caught fish and seafood, as well as fresh fruits and vegetables at every meal. Please keep in mind that we are off the beaten track, and not everything is available all of the time. Our very own organic garden provides us with chilis, bananas, pineapple, coconut, passion fruit, papaya, dragon fruit, taro, cassava, and lemongrass - all of which get used on a daily basis.

Vegetarian or any allergies? Don’t fear! They’ve got you covered.

*The hunting and gathering are done each morning at the local market, so the food is always fresh.

**With a strict “no MSG” rule.
