The local culture is rich and very old. Megalithic statues can be found all over Nias Island. Some of these still sit in the fronts of Afulu locals homes. The local people were head hunters and a fierce race of warriors. They were often at war with other tribes on the island. This is all best seen in the North Nias Museum in the main town of Gunung sitoli.

The Afulu area is very tropical as it sits just above the equator. Hot and Humid most of the time with sporadic thunder storms that cool the area in the afternoons. Huge Coconut plantations cover a lot of the area and have done for over 100 years. The tall Coconut trees around Afulu Villas are over 100 years old. Fertile lands and plenty of rain means the jungle grows like crazy. Areas that are cleared can be swallowed by the jungle in a matter of weeks if not kept. There is rich wild life, Nias Monkeys frequent the back wall of Afulu villas looking for fruits. Plenty of bird life, lizards and snakes live in the surrounding Jungle. The area is teaming with life.

There are plenty of places to explore around the Afulu area. Many other beaches for swimming and reefs for snorkelling. The local Markets are on Thursday in Afulu village. Lahewa Township is a 40 minutes bike ride away with many local shops and fruit stores. A highlight is to visit the North Nias Museum in Gunung Sitoli when you arrive or leave. A must see for all visitors.
